Adaptive Filtering Algorithm Using Long-Range Correlation for the Removal of Impulse Noise from Images

2006
An adaptive filter using long-range correlation for the removal of impulse noise from images was proposed. Impulse noise was detected by the method of local extremum at first. Then the background mean square error between signal pixels and noise pixels was computed in the definite search range, and the filtering process was going by the adaptive weight method based on the value of background mean square error. At last, the filtering process was applied iteratively. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is superior to many exiting methods, being especially effective for the restoration of details that only have one pixel in width. When images are highly corrupted, the proposed algorithm is also effective.
