Package of a dual-tapered-fiber coupled microsphere resonator with high Q factor

Abstract We package a high-quality ( Q ) factor optical whispering gallery mode (WGM) microsphere resonator side coupled to two tapered fibers without changing the initial coupling conditions, achieving a final Q as high as 2.7×10 6 . The mechanical stability of the coupling system is improved by placing the tapers in contact with the microsphere. The packaged device can be easily sealed in a targeted hermetic box according to different practical applications, which provides long term maintenance of the coupling efficiency and high- Q factor. Moreover, we test the temperature dependence of the packaged device and demonstrate its capability for thermal tuning of the drop wavelength. This device has a variety of advantages, such as portability, low-cost, and ease of fabrication.
