Changes in Psychological Behavior Accompanied by the Short‒term Usage of Flash Glucose Monitoring for Newly Diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

2020
Aims:To assess the psychological effects of short‒term use of the Libre Flash Glucose Monitoring(FGM)system in newly diagnosed patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)during 12 months. Methods:Thirty patients with newly diagnosed T2DM were randomly assigned into two groups, and 12‒month comparisons were made between the group with wearing Libre for 2 to 4 weeks at the beginning of the treatment(Libre group:LG)and the group without wearing Libre(non‒Libre group:N‒LG). We administered questionnaires at regular time inter vals to assess the satisfaction with diabetes treatment (DTSQ)and the psychological burden associated with diabetes(PAID), together with the measurements of glycated hemoglobin(HbA1c), body mass index(BMI)and other metabolic parameters. Results:After the initiation of therapy for diabetes, HbA1c, BMI, and other metabolic factors improved significantly in both groups with no interaction of TIME× GROUP. DTSQ score was significantly(p=0.0012)higher in LG than N‒LG after 1 month, with a significant interaction(p=0.0007)between the two groups during 12 months. In contrast, PAID score in N‒LG was non‒significantly higher(p=0.0661)in N‒LG than LG after 1 month with a marginal interaction between two groups(p= 0.0912). Conclusions:At the initiation of therapy for diabetes, there might have occurred an increase in satisfaction and a decrease in psychological burden by a short‒term induction of the Libre system. It should be elucidated in a future investigation whether wearing the Libre for a long time has a favorable effect on psychological status as well as metabolic parameters.
