Effect of corona disc on the performance of polymeric insulator under polluted conditions

2016
The work presented in this paper emphasis on improving the pollution flashover performance of polymeric insulators under polluted conditions. In this regard, experiments have been carried out on polymeric insulator with and without a corona disc fixed at HV terminal end of the insulator to study the variation of leakage current under different ESDDs. It is observed that the leakage current has reduced considerably with insulator having corona disc in comparison with insulator without corona disc for a uniform pollution distribution. An electrical field distribution study also has been carried out for the same insulator with and without corona disc using ANSYS LF simulation software. The field distribution study revealed that field at triplen junction of the insulator has reduced considerably in comparison with field distribution of polymeric insulator without corona disc. Both experimental and simulation studies have shown that performance of polymeric insulators under polluted conditions can be improved by fixing a corona disc at HV terminal end of the insulator.
