Síndrome de Forestier-Rotes-Querol: una causainusual de disfagia

2018
Dysphagia is a frequent cause of primary care visit. Making a correct differential diagnosis is essential in order to not delay the diagnosis. In the following, a cause of dysphagia, although uncommon, which we should not overlook, is presented. Forestier-Rotes-Querol syndrome or diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis is a disease consisting in calcification of the anterior cervical longitudinal ligament whose etiology is still unknown. Normally, it is asymptomatic, although when it affects the cervical spine, the predominant symptom is dysphagia. The mechanical compression of the esophagus is the principal cause of the dysphagia in this disease, although this also supposes a chronic inflammatory reaction in the pharynx and esophagus. The treatment is still controversial.
