Use of ion beam analysis for measuring ion transport in oxides

Examples are presented of the variety of transport information that can be obtained from oxides using Rutherford backscattering and/or nuclear reaction analysis. Diffusion coefficients for both oxygen and magnesium in MgO have been measured for temperatures below 1000/sup 0/C. Disproportionation due to electric currents in MgAl/sub 2/O/sub 4/ has been demonstrated. The ionic current carrier in SrTiO/sub 3/ has been identified.
