The present invention relates to a method for generating a sub-surface mark in a transparent body. According to the invention the label is made less than 500 microns below the surface in that a applied to the substrate surface layer system is applied to the substrate increased damage threshold. If the layer system is designed as a reflex-reducing for the readout wavelength layer system, so the contrast is increased during reading. If the layer system for the writing wavelength is formed as a mirror, it may be written in reflection with reduced intensity.
