Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders/Ehlers–Danlos Syndrome and Disordered Eating Behavior

2022
Joint hypermobility is a common trait in the general population but also a hallmark of the hereditary disorders of connective tissue such as Ehlers-Danlos syndromes. These altered collagen conditions have been associated with multisystemic complications such as gastrointestinal problems, temporomandibular dysfunction, fragility of oral mucosa, and test and smell abnormalities among others that can potentially affect eating behaviors, weight, and nutrition. In this chapter, we exposed existing evidence about the connection between hypermobility-related disorders and eating and weight issues as well as some clues to explain such association that deserve more research and clinical attention.
