Trends in U.S. kraft mill TRS emissions

1999
Estimates of TRS (Total Reduced Sulfur) emissions from U.S. kraft pulp mills for 1970, 1980, 1990, and 1995 came from knowledge of equipment installed at kraft mills at various times and regulatory requirements imposed on kraft mills over the 25-year period. Total TRS emissions from all kraft mill point sources declined more than 100000 tons from 1970 to 1995 despite more than 80% increase in kraft pulp production. On a per unit production basis, emissions declined more than 90%. Application: Regulatory programs, improved technologies, better operating practices, and increased attention to minimizing community odor impacts have dramatically reduced TRS emissions from kraft pulp mills.
