Urate excretion during mannitol and glucose diuresis

Abstract Uric acid clearance was determined in 7 young men during glucose and mannitol infusions. In both situations, uric acid clearance increased to a similar degree, but increases in osmolar clearance were much less during glucose infusion than during mannitol infusion. Since glucose produces an increase in uric acid clearance per unit osmolar increase which is three times that seen with mannitol, it is concluded that the effect of glucose is the result of factors other than the osmotic diuresis it produces.
