Fenticonazole as Antimicrobial Chemotherapy of Superficial Fungal Infections

1999
SummaryThe incidence of superficial mycosis has risen in recent years and now affects one-fourth of the world’s population, making this type of infection the most frequent form of infectious disease particularly in dermatology and gynecology. Specific topical antifungal agents include many different drugs but the imidazoles represent one of the two major classes of azole derivatives. Of these, fenticonazole is one of the most interesting for treatment of superficial fungal infections. This article focuses, after the preclinical analysis, on a clinical evaluation of fenticonazole, a topical imidazole currently marketed in 9 European and 16 other countries, summarizing its efficacy and safety as demonstrated in 43 published studies including a total of 3557 patients.
