Accurate Definition of Gestational Age

2008
UNLABELLED: A precise definition of gestational age is essential for decision making during pregnancy and in the neonatal period. In the medical communication there still today is considerable confusion concerning the correct definition resulting in frequent mistakes in reporting and potentially serious consequences for mother and baby. MATERIAL AND METHOD: 220 clinically experienced and academically active obstetricians and neonatologists of German speaking countries were questioned to give the correct definition. RESULTS: 97% of the responders support the use of completed weeks plus days starting by the word"at". An example would be: "delivery at 36+6 weeks of gestation". CONCLUSION: This definition is consistent with the one recommended by the WHO and a general use is the basis for precise medical decisions, internationally valid statistics and better communication.
