PRAGMATIC FORCE BEHIND THE UTTERANCE OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT STUDENTS IN SEMINAR CLASS DISCUSSION

2013
This writing is aimed at describing the pragmatic force behind the utterances of English Department Students who are joining Seminar on Linguistics Class in 2013. The data are the utterances uttered by the English Department students within interaction among them in Seminar class. Data are taken by observational method, non- participatory observation, note-taking, recording, and unstructured interview technique. The data analysis is done by pragmatic and referential identity method related to concept proposed by Leech (1983) and Yule (1996). The result of analysis is done descriptively. Having analyzed the data, it is found that there are five pragmatic forces behind the utterances of English Department students in Seminar on Linguistics class interaction. They are (1) giving in-put; (2) questioning; (3) requesting; (4) offering; and (5)congratulating. Requesting is in the highlighted frequence since the students are of great curiousity of more information about their friends’ thesis proposal.
