Monte Carlo simulation of wind field around long-span membrane structures

2008
The paper introduces the simulation of the three-dimensional turbulence over discretised spatial domains in complex topography around membrane structures. The study consists of the simulation of the wind turbulence in the case of non-uniform mean flow by using Monte Carlo technique, replacement of the classical simulation formula based on the harmonic superimposition by an FFT-based implementation, the factorization of the power-spectral density matrix of turbulence through the POD,and the implementation of the procedure by using a parallel algorithm. The application of the procedure to the case of a membrane structure capon roof for which three components of turbulence are simulated verifies that the simulation spectra compare well with target spectra.Monte Carlo technique proposed here for modeling turbulence in complex topography and the three methods for improving computational efficiency prove accurate and validate.
