Astronomy and the Space Station

1985
Space is the natural site from which to conduct astronomy. From the surface of the Earth, the atmosphere is a murky, opaque medium through which passes only a tiny fraction of the radiation that carries astronomical information. Thus, astronomers have always sought the high ground—carrying instruments to mountaintops and flying them on rockets and balloons. It is natural that astronomers have been among NASA's earliest and best customers.
