Curators and Australian art history: a personal view*

1. At the end of 1979, having finished my fine arts degree at Sydney University, I was faced with a choice: Should I go on to a course of postgraduate study or should I try for a curatorial job in an art museum? The issue was decided for me when I went, speculatively, for an interview at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. I didn’t get the job I applied for, but was offered another, as a curatorial assistant working in the registration area.
