What kind of language and tone does one use so that what is written is not merely a record of horror but an attempt to understand something of ourselves? Most novels about the partition were written much after 1947—for ex ample, Bhisham Sahni's TAMAS was written about 25 years later. How are memories recast imaginatively in a fictional text? And most importantly, why do you think that the partition occurred?
