Neonatal orbital subperiosteal haematoma following shoulder dystocia

A 1-day-old newborn presented with prominence and lacrimation of the left eye after spontaneous vaginal delivery at 41+3 weeks gestation. The delivery was complicated by shoulder dystocia and he was later noted to have sustained a fracture of the clavicle secondary to the traumatic delivery. The paediatric team suspected left-sided glaucoma. The baby was referred for ophthalmological review and 3–4 mm left-sided proptosis and mild swelling of the left upper eyelid were noted (figure 1).
