Luminescence study of Cr4+-doped silicates

Abstract The results of optical absorption, luminescence, and lifetime measurements on chromium-doped Y 2 SiO 5 and Gd 2 SiO 5 crystals are reported. The dominant absorption and emission bands in both crystals are assigned to transitions on the Cr 4+ ion in distorted tetrahedral sites. An additional near infrared emitting center was observed in Y 2 SiO 5 .
