Pathogen inactivation of platelet concentrates
2010
Question 1 Has pathogen inactivation of PCs been implemented in your country ⁄ centre? If so, which technique is used? • If so, does this concern all PCs or only PCs for certain groups of patients? • How many inactivated PCs have been transfused and what was the experience with them so far? • Have you noticed any untoward reactions or effects that were, or might have been, due to the inactivation process? • Is the necessary frequency of PC transfusions comparable to that of untreated PCs? • Is irradiation of PCs, when indicated, still necessary when they are pathogen-inactivated? • If the platelets are obtained by thrombocytapheresis, which tests, normally required, can be safely omitted, if they are pathogen-inactivated?
