About the Effective Regular Service of the ETC Equipment and Making of ETC Equipment Life Prolongment by Preventive Maintenance

The availability of ETC (Electric Toll Collection System) in Japan has increased rapidly after being introduced in 2000. ETC equipment is indispensable to the expressway and leads to lane closure if the ETC equipment breaks down. As a result, congestion occurs. Thus, equipment is regularly checked for stable operation, and check data is accumulated continuously. Moreover, failure data is accumulated when breakdowns occur. By analyzing the accumulated data, the authors judged the parts and cycles that break down easily. Parts that cause breakdowns earlier than the judged function deterioration time are exchanged. As a result, breakdown incidence, maintenance of function, and the long-term use of equipment were impacted. In addition, the lane closure frequency was decreased, with the effect of improving customer service. This report discusses maintaining the functioning of the ETC equipment by doing effective regular service and preventive maintenance.
