Performance increase by process parameter variation during turning of AISI 4140
2021
Abstract Usually, constant process parameters are used for turning. These process parameters result in a thermomechanical load of the tool, which leads to a specific wear pattern. Varying the process parameters along the toolpath, e.g. linear or sinusoidal, can extend tool life by distributing wear over a wider area and reducing the thermal tool load. In this paper, a method for designing process parameter variations during turning is presented. It is shown that tool wear can be reduced using process parameter variation. This reduction in wear is due to a decrease in thermal tool load. In addition, a method for designing processes with modulated process parameters is being developed.
