Producción de leche y duración de la lactancia en cabras mestizas de la raza canaria en Venezuela

2008
In order to evaluate milk production and lactation length in Canary crossbred goats and some of the ambient factors that influence these characters in Venezuela, data available on 2 goat farms located in states of Lara and Yaracuy were analyzed. In both units animals were fed crop residues of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) and orange peals (Citrus sp), grass hay and approximately 1 kg/day of a commercial concentrate with 17% CP. Data were analyzed using the GLM procedure of the SAS system through a fixed effects model that included effect of farm, crossbreeding level, parturition type, parturition number, parturition year and parturition season. Average milk production per day and average lactation length obtained for 119 observations were 2.46±0.60 kg/day and 192.4±37.67 days, respectively. Statistical analysis showed significant effect (p 0.05) of farm, parturition type or parturition year was found. For lactation length a significant effect (p 0.05) of other variables studied was found.
