About 3% of patients in whom CAUTIs develop go on to have bacteremia develop, and the mortality rate for CAUTI is 2.8%. With CAUTIs having an incidence of close to 2 million cases per year, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have identified CAUTI as a “never event,” limiting reimbursement to acute care hospitals.
