An assessment of sweet sorghum cultivars for ethanol production

2009
Fourteen genotypes including two checks (CSV-19SS and SSV-84) were evaluated for their yield and juice quality attributes. The yield and quality parameters of CSH 22SS were found to be promising followed by SPSSV 20 and SPSSV 15. While considering yield and juice quality parameters of initial sweet sorghum varietal trials entries CSV 19SS and SPSSH 18 were found to be promising among the new genotypes trials. Harvesting of crop at 30 days after 50 % flowering (hard dough stage) was appropriate to get desired 0Brix, total sugars and TSI. The CSH 22SS was found promising followed by CSV 19SS, PAC 52093 and SSV 84. The harvested sweet sorghum stalks must be processed as early as possible to avoid the loss of sugars/ethanol.
