Designing Space Interface Through Interaction in New Media Art

2014
The motive of ROPE was to mimic a jump rope; using the medium of a rotating rope, the author created a virtual space that differs from real physical space. The conceptual and theoretical background of the installation was space. In this paper, the fluid virtual space the extended art experience of the audience created by the installation is discussed using space as the main topic of discussion. Through the topic of interaction, the concepts of the installation as new media art are analyzed according to three principles of new media: modularity, automation, and variability. The components of the interface of the installation are modular. The components were constructed to be automated and to easily interact with the audience. The actively moving audience gives the installation variability, making the installation more interactive. The installation prototype, which is the base of the conceptual research presented in this paper, comprises both visual and auditory forms to convey a new spatial concept to the audience. In the technological construction of the installation, the physical properties (e.g., length, weight, and speed) of each component were considered. The anticipated final installation will be built on a larger scale and have more elaborate form and technology than the prototype. Thus, a more fluid interaction between the audience and the installation can be achieved, creating an individualized space for the audience.
