PROBLEMS OF ENERGY CONSERVATION IN RELATION TO STREET LIGHTING

The author states the need for energy conservation, and the benefits that will follow. Energy savings made by replacement of existing lighting by low pressure sodium are tabulated, and a sequence of procedural decisions by authorities contemplating such a changeover is presented, with an indication of possible sources of finance. The conflict between energy and environmental considerations is stated with some local departures from complete use of monochromatic yellow lighting that may be possible. The use of photo-electric control is advocated for new lighting units. The necessity for modifying or completely replacing, and possibly re-siting lighting units is discussed. Energy savings by part-night lighting are considered in relation to anticipated increase in traffic accident costs. In conclusion the author considers the availability of labour and materials for the work programme, and also electricity tariffs. (TRRL)
