Depression in children and adolescents

2003
Depression is a common problem in children and adolescents. The disorder may be overlooked because of the prominent irritability seen in children with depression and because of the perception that moodiness is a normal phase of childhood. Depression frequently is associated with other psychiatric problems and neurologic disorders. Therapy consists of psychotherapy and medication, with serotonin reuptake inhibitors the first choice for pharmacotherapy.
