Resolving the Heterogeneity of Tarry Wastes During Investigation of Acid Tar Pits

1995
The problematic nature of acid tars resulting from their high acidity, viscosity, high molecular weight and polar hydrocarbon content has in the past restricted remediation of pits used for their disposal. This paper describes the strategy adopted in designing a site investigation to determine the extent and composition of highly heterogeneous waste materials in an acid tar pit site in Derbyshire, where acid tars and other waste products from the refining of used lubricating oils, together with a range of other waste materials, had been deposited.
