Influence of the cosmological evolution of the EBL on the limits derived from VHE gamma-ray blazar observations

2012
Very high energy (VHE) γ-rays from distant sources such as blazars are attenuated due to the interaction with low energy photons of the extragalactic background light (EBL) in the ultraviolet to infrared wavelength band. Thus, the EBL leaves an imprint on the observed energy spectra of such sources. With assumptions about the source physics it is possible to derive limits on the EBL photon density. However, the EBL evolves with redshift a fact that often been neglected in the deviations of the limits. Here, the influence of evolution is examined by implementing it in a phenomenological way with four VHE spectra and compared to previous results.
