Fynbos Proteaceae as model organisms for biodiversity research and conservation : news and views

2012
Woody plants of the Proteaceae family are a symbol of fynbos. Of the approximately 360 southern African species, over 330 are restricted to the Fynbos biome and form an important part of this biome's exceptional plant diversity. Proteaceae dominate the overstorey of fynbos vegetation, play a key role for water, carbon and nutrient cycling, and provide resources for many species of pollinators and herbivores. Moreover, Proteaceae are responsible for the bulk of the economic value generated by the fynbos wildflower industry and serve as flagship species for conservation.
