Building Structural Health Monitoring: an FBG-based estimation of external vibrations

2021
In this work, we propose a vibration monitoring architecture which is based on the interrogation of a set of FBG sensor arrays and the system state prediction based on the collected data. This architecture can be deployed and parameterized according to the application and the type of the monitored structure (building, bridge, railways, etc). The deployed FBG sensor network allows to compute the fiber elongation under strain, the displacement and the vibration of each FBG node in the network. A decision to reduce the vibration values can be made based on the measurements performed and whether the vibration exceeds a predefined threshold. The efficiency of the proposed architecture is assessed based on a real case study (The San Diego story office Building) and real displacements signals collected by sensor nodes in the presence of an earthquake.
