Gestational weight gain and maternal and offspring's long-term health

2010
Excessive or inadequate weight gain during pregnancy do not only have a negative impact on the recent pregnancy outcome, but also play a significant role on maternal and offspring's long-term health.Excessive weight gain during pregnancy may cause maternal obesity, diabetes or hypertension in the future, and lead to childhood and adult overweight, obesity or hypertension in the offspring.Too little gestational weight gain may lead to offspring long-term obese or disorder of glucose metabolism in their adulthood,as well as the development of diabetes.Exercise and dietary modification can control weight gain during pregnancy.Reasonable gesta-tional weight gain is important in the reduction of adverse pregnancy outcome. This is a review in the paper of recent years about the rela-tionship between gestational weight gain and maternal and offspring's long-term health.
