Processes for making compositions and hemostatic devices containing those compositions

2004
A process for making a flowable hemostatic composition, comprising: introducing a volume of biocompatible liquid in a flask mixture equipped with a system for mixing said liquid, introduce a volume of biocompatible gas into said volume of liquid while said system mixing is operating under conditions effective to mix said liquid and said gas together to form a foam comprising a discontinuous gas phase composed of said gas spread substantially homogeneously throughout a continuous liquid phase comprising said liquid, introducing into said foam an amount of solid particles of a biocompatible polymer suitable for use in hemostasis and which is substantially insoluble in said liquid; and mixing said foam and said solid particles together under conditions effective to form a substantially homogeneous composition composed of said discontinuous gas phase and said scattered substantially homogeneously throughout said continuous liquid phase particles, wherein the ratio of the solid particles mentioned , of the liquid phase and the gas phase ranges from 1: 2: 1 to 1:12:13, based on mass: volume: volume (grams: milliliters: mL), wherein said biocompatible polymer is selected from a group consisting of selected from a group consisting of gelatin, collagen, fibrinogen and fibronectin proteins, and polysaccharides, wherein said flowable hemostatic composition further comprises a functionally effective amount of thrombin, and therefore to form said flowable hemostatic composition.
