Hepatic Smad7 overexpression causes severe iron overload in mice

TO THE EDITOR: Most cases of genetic iron overload are characterized by elevated systemic iron levels and iron deposition in parenchymal cells due to inadequate expression of hepcidin. Here, we present a novel mouse model of iron overload due to selective overexpression of Smad7 in hepatocytes.
