Throughout the world, all pilots are subject to regular medical checks in
order to assess their continuing fitness to fly. The rules that govern such
medical checks vary from country to country and are based upon Standards
and Recommended Practices (SARPS) published and periodically updated by
ICAO, the International Civil Aviation Organisation, which is an agency of the
United Nations (ICAO, 2012).
