Separation of Depleted Uranium Fragments from Gun Test Catchment. Volume 3. Economic Comparison of Depleted Uranium Disposal Options for Elgin AFB Gun Test Facility

1993
Abstract : This technical report is divided into four volumes. Volume I presents Summary and Recommendations, Volume II contains Catchment System Evaluation and Separating Methods, Volume III contains an Economic Comparison of Disposal Options, and Volume IV documents Bench-Scale Tests for Separation. Activities are described for a task entitled 'Separation of Depleted Uranium Fragments from Gun Test Catchments, Volume III, sponsored by the Air Force Engineering Services Center, Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida. This volume reports the results of an economic evaluation of five alternative disposal options for contaminated sand. Disposal costs were estimated for the following options of (1) Improved screening, with sand recycle and on site packaging; (2) Improved screening, with sand recycle and on-site packaging with depleted uranium (DU) fragment recycle; (3) Improved screening, with sand recycle and on site packaging, with wet separator for derating fines; (4) Improved Screening, with sand recycle and on site packaging, with chemical treatment for derating fines; and (5) Modified test butt; and no sand processing. The options '(1) Improved screening, with sand recycle and on site packaging,' is the lowest cost, technically feasible disposal option.
