Radical surgery for cancer of the extremities

1953
Abstract 1. 1. Six cases of advanced cancer of the extremities are presented. Two patients were treated by hemipelvectomy, one by thigh disarticulation and groin dissection, and three by interscapulothoracic amputation. One of the latter patients had initially undergone scapulectomy. 2. 2. The indications and technics of the various procedures are briefly described. 3. 3. In this series of cases the results have been good as far as palliation is concerned even though the curative end results were low. In cases of advanced malignant disease it is justifiable to perform such radical operations for palliation; however, if a better cure rate is to be obtained, the procedures must be instituted early in the disease.
