Leuko eytes play an impo rtan t role on the pathogenesis of seps is-ind uced disseminated intra vaseu lar eo-agu lation . Despite the beneficial role of leukoeytes in host defence, these cells mayaiso eause the initation and prog-ress ion of tissue inju ry in seps is. Cytokines such as tumor neeros is Iactor- ci (T NF-a ) and interleukin- 1 p (IL-1 p) ac-tivate monoe ytes , neutrophils and endo thelial eells. Inflammatory eytok ines initate coagulation mechanism by eonvert ing end otheliu m from an anlithrombotic surfaee to a prothrombotic surfaee. These eytok ines aetivate both the extr insic and in trinsic coagulation system by stimulating tissue factor production. Moreov er, the y activate neutrophils to release inflamm atory med iators such as neutrop hil elestase and oxygen free rad ica ls. Various pathogenic effects that occur in sepsis are attributed to the release of oxygen radioals and en zym es from neu troph ils. Th is review pre-sen t information abo ut leu kocytes and their import ant roles in sepsis.
