Green chemistry in textile and fashion

2021
Abstract This chapter reviewed the study of green chemistry in textile and fashion, which can be synthesized by green chemistry or nano-sized functionally advanced materials which have high-performance applications in energy generation and storage, carbon dioxide fixation, electronic devices and are sustainable in terms of production and application with respect to the environment. Methods in brief of preparation of nanoparticles and nanofibers, advantages of green synthesis, and limitations of nanomaterials are discussed. This chapter also provides information related to recent research work on green chemistry and the available methods for synthesis. It also gives a comprehensive overview of the recent status and suggests future directions for employing green chemistry for possible various applications mainly in textile and fashion. Natural resources utilized in green chemistry synthesis is reviewed and its application on textile and fashion are also discussed. Clothing is one of the largest chunks of human consumption. However, textile and fashion are known to be the most polluting industries. The increasing sense of social responsibility and public awareness about the environment has forced the textile manufacturers to produce more environmentally friendly products. Many companies are focusing on the use of sustainable production ways. This chapter gives a brief overview of understanding the term sustainable fashion and textiles using green chemistry. This chapter also discusses the recent trends in sustainable practices in the textile and fashion sector along with challenges.
