walnut in Xinjiang

Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region is a border province in the northwest of China It has a typical arid or semi-arid climate zone, and has excellent landscape and climate conditions for walnut production. Adequate irrigation water and irrigation facilities, rich resources in walnut cultivars, mature techniques for supporting the walnut cultivation, etc. Especially in the 21st century, the walnut plantation industry in Xinjiang has entered a period of rapid development with 2~3×10(4) ha planted per annum under the implementation of the strategy of "Developing the Distinctive Fruit Industry". By the end of 2010, the walnut planted area in Xinjiang reached 2.65×10(5) ha, a bearing area of 1.52×10(5) ha, an annual output walnut 1.86×10(5) t, accounting for 17.51% of the national walnut (1.06×10(6) t) of the total output. Xinjiang has become one of the main walnut producing areas in China, and second with stable in walnut production from 2010, expected to exceed 3.0×10(5)t in 2012.
