Abstract The kinetics of the osmium(VIII) catalyzed reduction ofoctacyanomolybdate(V) and octacyanotungstate(V) ions by Se(IV) have been studied in an alkaline medium. The reaction is first order with respect to M(CN) 3− 8 ions (M = Mo, W) and the osmium(Vlll) catalyst. The second order reaction rate constants are 4.30 × 10 3 M − min- −1 and 2.60 × 10 3 M −1 sec −1 at 293 K respectively. A reaction mechanism is proposed.
