Research progress of dexmedetomidine in prevention postoperative nausea and vomiting

Background The incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) ranges from 20% to 80%. Dexmedetomidine(Dex) is a potent and highly selective α2 adrenergic receptor agonist and recent studies suggest that Dex may be of vital role in prevention and treatment of PONV. Objective The effect of Dex in PONV prevention and therapy will be reviewed. Content Possible mechanisms, advantages and the best dose, application time and method of Dex in experimental studied were summarized in this review to explore the effect of Dex on the prevention and treatment of PONV. Trend Dex is expected to be a new drug option for reducing PONV. Key words: Dexmedetomidine; Prevention; Postoperative nausea and vomiting
