ICT and Well-Being in Employees: Examining Differential Technostress Relationships

Information and communication technology (ICT) is ubiquitous in today’s work organizations. While ICT has the advantage of enabling collaboration across time and space, there is a danger in the flexibility it affords. Researchers have coined the term technostress to describe the negative effects that ICT might have on users, particularly employees in organizations (Ayyagari, Grover, & Purvis, 2011). The symposium seeks to adress the question of which negative effects can be expected, and under which conditions. The four studies employ different methodologies ranging from qualitative to quantitative, from interviews to diary studies to longitudinal analyses using three waves of data. By using different methodological and theoretical approaches, the four contributions complement each other and shed more light on the specific instances of ICT use that might be detrimental for users’ well-being.
