VEHICLE/ROADSIDE COMMUNICATIONS : (A NEAR TERM IVHS OPPORTUNITY)

Implemented via a network of roadside readers and in-vehicle transponders, Vehicle Road Communications (VRC) can cost-effectively provide a variety of functions to support IVHS needs. Some of these applications are identified and desirable VRC performance criteria are addressed. Architectures for different levels of VRC implementation are also suggested. Near term opportunities for integrating VRC with other systems to enhance traffic operations are investigated.
