Genotyping of SYT-SSX in a Case of Phalangeal Synovial Sarcoma
2005
Synovial sarcoma (SS) is an uncommon malignant mesenchymal tumor with genetic translocation between 18th and X chromosomes found in 95% of cases while the fusion types were noted to determine prognosis. We report a case of locally- confined foot SS with genetic demonstration of monophasic fibrous pattern with SYT-SSX2 genetic fusion that suggests relatively good prognosis. Thus wide resection with ray amputation was done without adjuvant therapy. There was neither local recurrence nor distant metastasis after regular follow-up for more than five years. From the experience of such case, genetic study may help us justify the optimal treatment strategy for foot soft tissue tumors with cytogenetic aberrations.
