Spontaneous bacterial empyema caused by Salmonella enteritidis

Spontaneous bacterial empyema (SBEM) occurs in about 0.4% of patients with decompensated liver disease. We report the first case of SBEM caused by Salmonella species. The patient had end-stage liver disease and became sick while visiting the Dominican Republic.
