The Tribal Communication Continuum: An Anthropological Perspective of the Communication System among the Jaunsaris, Nicobarese and Jarwas

Present paper deals with the comparative study of the communication system prevailing among the Jaunsaris of Jaun-sar-Bawar (Chakrata, Uttarakhand), the Nicobarese of Car Nicobar (A&N islands), and the Jarwas of Andman islands. The Jaunsari tribe resides in mountainous region while the Nicobarese live in remote islandes of India surrounded by water. In between them, the Jarwa tribals, having very small numerical strength, live in a special reserved/protected area. The paper tries to discuss about as to how Jarwas succeeded to save their identity during the catastrophic ‘tsunami’, while the Nicobarese failed to do so and the modern ‘Early Warning System’ met the same destiny. This paper, along with comparing the communication system of these three tribes, finally attempts to explain the continuum found in the communication system of tribals.
