The Clinical Significance of the Human Cytomegalovirus pp65 Antigen Test for Diagnosis of Tourette's Syndrome in Children

2006
Objective To investigate the relation between Tourette's syndrome(TS) and active human cytomegalovirus(HCMV) infection. Methods 64 blood specimens from the children with TS and 40 blood specimens from the normal children were collected. The peripheral blood mononuclear cells(PBMCs) were separated from plasma, and the former was used for the HCMV pp65 antigen test by immune fluorescent assay(IFA) and HCMV DNA was quantitative analysis by quantitative polymerase chain reaction(PCR) in parallel comparison with the HCMV pp65 antigen test. Results 21.9% TS children were positive to HCMV pp65 antigen and only 2.5% normal children were positive. The correspondence of the HCMV pp65 test and quantitative PCR was 89.1%.Conclusion The rate of HCMV infection in TS children markedly high than that of normal children,it suggested that HCMV infection perhaps be one of induced factor of TS in children.
