Stability Increase of $rm NbTi$ Conductors With Additions of Extremely Large Specific Heat Substances

2006
The comparative study of stability increase of NbTi conductors with extremely large heat capacity substances-LHCS (CeCu 6 and HoCu 2 ) additions was carried out. The short samples were made as follows. Mono & multi-filamentary wires 0.83-0.85 mm dia with copper matrix and CeCu 6 or HoCu 2 filaments, prepared by PIT and subsequent metallurgical methods, were soft-soldered to NbTi multifilamentary wires of the same diameter. For comparison the samples made of NbTi wires soft-soldered to copper wires were used. The samples were placed in a transverse magnetic field and subjected to the inductive heating of different duration. The tests were carried out both in the practically adiabatic conditions, and in the well-cooled ones. It was found that the stability of samples with LHCS additions is much larger than that of the samples without LHCS additions. Quantitatively the gain depends mainly on the disturbance time duration and cooling conditions. The tested samples can be considered as one of the simplest prototypes of long-length composite superconductors with enhanced stability for practical windings
